History

“I arrived in Romeu at 4 in the afternoon on the 18th May 1814. I tried to find an inn and the only place available belonged to Maria Rita who, strangely enough, had no food to offer us. I order her to roast some codfish and ate, for the first time, black rye bread with it.”

Clemente Menéres “40 Anos de Trás-os-montes”

Clemente Menéres had just arrived from Porto and was about to found the Casa Menéres, in Romeu.
In the meantime, Maria Rita died, the inn was abandoned and derelict, and later on the Casa Menéres purchased it.
In 1966, Manoel Menéres, son of Clemente, revived the “Maria Rita” by bringing in his cook from his own household together with the family recipes.

With the same spirit as before, both his son and then one of his grandsons carried on the activity, a culture deeply rooted in this land.
